Maui Budget and Finance Committee Passes Tax Increase

2012-05-09

Issue Brief

On May 1, 2012, the Maui County Council Budget and Finance Committee voted to increase the timeshare property tax rate 50 cents from $15.00 to $15.50. While this is lower than the $1.15 increase proposed by Mayor Arakawa, this will mark the second year in a row where the largest tax increase has fallen on timeshare owners. The Budget and Finance Committee recommendations will be presented to the full Council on May 23 for a vote.

Impact

If this tax passes the full Maui County Council, timeshare owners will see an additional 50 cent increase in property taxes for every $1000 of assessed value.

Position/Call to Action

ARDA-ROC and ARDA strongly oppose any increase in property taxes in Maui and testified and lobbied against these proposed changes. You can visit the Tax Resource Center to obtain past testimony from ARDA and ARDA-ROC as well as other information relating to this effort.
